Q. Is garlic safe for dogs? It is listed as one of your ingredients but I heard that it wasn’t good for dogs?
Thanks,
Luana, Geelong.

A. Most studies with animals and humans indicate that consuming reasonable amounts of garlic can be beneficial. There are indications it can benefit cardiovascular health. Various sulphur compounds in fresh garlic appear to account for this favourable effect. Some of these impact the biosynthesis of fatty acids (in humans some studies have shown that consumption of garlic can help to lower cholesterol levels). However ajoene, a compound found in garlic, has an anti-clotting effect on the blood. This may account for some of garlic's beneficial effects, but very high doses of garlic may cause problems because of this property. Basically a little/moderate amount of garlic does good, but consumption of very large amounts is not advisable (its a bit like say carrot juice - there have been cases of human Vitamin A toxicity due to consumption of very large amounts of carrot juice). Note that the garlic content of 4Legs Home Cooked varieties is quite small and should not cause problems. Of course if problems like haemophilia exist then consumption of garlic may not be advisable. If you are concerned, it is always best to seek advice from your vet.

Did you know?

Dogs can see colour but it is not as vivid as the colour humans see. Dog colour is similar to what we see at twilight.

The nose pad of a cat is patterned in such a way that it is unique to each cat - similar to the way each human fingerprint is unique.
